FERTILE GROUND FOR SOMETHING NEW
Sisters Freehold was founded in 2021 by Makeima Freeland & Ann Turiano.
The two met doing theatre at Notre Dame of Maryland University in 2018 and have continued their co-mentorship since that time.
Our mission & model were developed with support from Baltimore Creatives Acceleration Network’s Scale Your Passion, Innovation Works GSBI BOOST, and the Innovation Works + Miller Center Accelerator.
Sisters Freehold merged with Horticulture Playwrights Workshop (formerly the Playwrights Fellowship at Cohesion Theatre Company) and welcomed Abby Cady as HPW Program Director in late 2021.
THE CODE SWITCH
World Premiere & Sisters Freehold’s First Commission
Written & Directed by Shakill Jamal
July 2023 @ Baltimore Theatre Project
Ensemble: Michael Changwe, Hana Clarice, Griffin DeLisle, Sha-Nel Henderson, Jae Jones, & Jess Rivera
To switch, or not to switch? Let’s ask the question.
Codeswitching.
Wouldn’t it be great for us to not have to? What about when you need to? In 2023 America?
Eventually you’re gonna flip that switch–some of us gotta work. Sometimes we do it within our own families. Some people switch it up in their circles just because.

US/THEM
A fundraiser for the Children’s Emergency Fund of Save the Children
Written by Carly Wijs
Directed by Dr. Natka Bianchini
September 2022 @ Graffiti Warehouse
Starring Anna DeBlasio & Quincy Vicks
In September 2004, a group of armed terrorists stormed School Number One in Beslan, Russia, taking hundreds of children, their parents and teachers hostage. The ensuing siege lasted three days and left 333 people dead, 186 of whom were children. Us/Them recounts those 3 harrowing days through the eyes of two children: Girl and Boy.
Us/Them is not a straightforward account of this terrible tragedy, but an exploration of the entirely individual way children cope with traumatic situations. Over the course of 60 minutes, Girl and Boy introduce us to their town and school, build the world of their experience, and try to make sense of the incomprehensible.
